2017 Writer’s Digest Award Writing Competition

By Sheryl Aronson, MFT

Greetings once again! Among the ten competition categories, there were over 5,100 entries in total – our judges were very impressed! As you already know, your entry was selected to represent your entries category as a Writer’s Digest 86th Annual Writing Competition Award Winner; and we understand how important bragging rights can be!

I won two awards last year for two articles I submitted:

Still Has the Hunger In Her Heart After Forty-Five Years

Melissa Manchester seemed at peace as I sat beside her. Although she had broken her ankle during the summer, (2015) she was still performing concerts; she was still giving her music 100% of that driving passion.   Manchester embodies the “grit” and “hunger” she belts out in You Gotta Love The Life. On the other hand her persona also mirrors a grand dame: refined, intelligent, contemplative. With each question asked by this reporter, I received eloquent answers from the unfathomable creativity of the Grammy winning musician.” – Sheryl Aronson

A Land So Foreign Yet Familiar

My seat is in the back, therefore I must pass everyone.  Although some people smile, mostly I am looked at with curiosity and surprise.  Even the flight attendants, who are from Atlanta, want to know, ‘Why are you going to Lagos?’ . . . with puzzlement in their eyes.  ‘What are you going to do there?’ One tapped me on the shoulder when I was returning to my seat and said, ‘My spirit wanted to tell you to be careful.  Know where the American Embassy is so if anything happens . . . ‘ If I were traveling to Paris, none of these words would ever be spoken. I’m a stranger in a strange land but I plan on grokking (becoming one with) the culture, especially the music.” – Sheryl Aronson
